How do you connect to the IRC channel?

How do you connect to the IRC channel anyway? Can someone please provide detailed instructions (Maybe even with pictures if you are that awesome) on how to connect and join??? I keep looking around threads and they skip so many steps? How do you do all this command stuff, I am totally confused!
