If no driver is present, the java api will fail. If the spongeapi doesn’t have the 5mb driver, each plugin that needs mysql will need to include it in their jar.

I wonder if Sponge could leverage the maven managed libraries that Minecraft and Forge both use. You know, the libraries folder. That way, a central place for dependencies can be accessed.
@ZachBora is right. I was unaware that this was something that Bukkit already did, and may have misunderstand the point of the topic.
