Understood! Creative mode attracts a lot of very young players. Also, the creative mode tutorial video needs an update. I’ve been putting it off because I know the ratio of creative mode GP players to survival mode GP players is about 50:2100!
Have you thought about an ingame tutorial? That’s 500% better than a video. Maybe I will try to make such a plugin when Sponge is out
Draft:
New players spawn in a special Tutorial world with rule signs.
They can not see other players or their interactions.
Tutorialbot tells them to claim a test plot.
Tutorialbot tells them how to resize plots.
Tutorialbot tells them how to trust friends.
…
If player fails, send link to video.
Success? Teleport to main world.
Steps can be configured, as well as the world + place for the tutorial.
I definitely have thought about it, and I don’t believe in-game tutorials beat videos - videos can actually demonstrate what to do and have voice-over. In-game tutorials are very clunky with only a small chat box and signs.
Also if I were to build such a tutorial into a plugin, I think many server admins wouldn’t like it - generating a whole new world and messing with their new player spawning system will get messy, especially if they already have a new player experience built that this has to somehow integrate into. It would be difficult to build in the first place due to all the custom world generation, and then getting it to smoothly integrate with the huge variety of other stuff servers have set up for new players is hard, too.
Maybe you can tell I’ve thought about this a lot, haha.
That’s right, but for a video, players have to leave the game, and there is no guarantee that they watch it (and many new players on my server did not).
True, but you can’t require a tutorial, either. Not without annoying experienced players, anyway. I think it’s good to have the training “obvious but optional”. In that spirit, my recent update to GriefPrevention made the video link more visible to new players.
What’s your Minecraft Multiplayer history? Why did you host your own server, and when? Start date/MC Version?

How did you advertise it?
Good old, verbal communication
Who paid the rent? And how many slots did it have?
A company called Craftnodehosting hosted it, and I paid for it; 15 slots
Did all players have a similar rank? Or was it based on experience, or even pay-to-win?
It was before I figured out Perms, so no ranks
Was there an active community, with forums or voice servers?
an Enjin website, with not much activity sadly
What did you experience as a leader of a community? Stories from your server!
Don’t disapoint! Or else all your players will leave.
Screenshots!
I lost them
Why did it shut down? And when?
I shut it down late Spring of 2013 because of neglect, and loss of players
Do you plan to host a server again?
Actually, I redid everything on Mysticcraft, effectively creating a new server and calling it Mysticcraft REBORN. This time, I’m trying to fall victim to the same problems as the original mysticcraft.
What’s your Minecraft Multiplayer history? Why did you host your own server, and when? Start date/MC Version?
My multiplayer history started in September 2011 with the “No Games For Young Men” youtube channel’s beta 1.7.3 server, I applied to be a mod on their server before it was even released. Around 1-2 months the server came under a greifer attack, as a mod we couldn’t do much and one of the other mod’s complained that we couldn’t do anything and the admins weren’t doing their job… so all the mods online at that time all got promoted to admin and they said, YOU DO IT!. The server started to die off and after a few months none of the staff really bothered coming online. By the beginning of November 2011 I was the last active admin on that server. I handled all the bans and issues on my own until the server closed a few days before Christmas due to the rest of the admins giving up on the server.
A week after this one of my fellow admins came to me and asked me to help run a server. His reason that he came to me was because of the dedication I shown in the previous server. The server Officially started on the leap year day, February 29th 2012. This server would eventually become known as the TeamVareide server. Vareide, Pedro6285 and I(Cataclisto) Became the 3 co-founders of the server. I would do the plugin/issue maintenance, Pedro would do the banning and Vareide did the advertising. Eventually we had more staff and Pedro left the server to focus on his YouTube channel. The server lasted longer then most creative servers and at one point was considered the worlds largest creative server. Towards the end of October 2013 I was fired from the server. Never was really given a reason… we had a admin meating, i was the first one there waiting for people come, then they started talking, I offered to do something plugin related regarding something that someone mentioned, and then bam, theirs no place left for you within the staff team- instantly removed from the staff.

The story behind the server’s name?
Both servers mentioned above, are based on the names of their youtube channels
Gamemode? Plugins? Mods? Maybe your own special plugins?
The nogameforyoungmen server was strictly survival (with rollback worldedit for staff and essentials)
The Teamvareide server was a hybrid, It was always creative, Ocasionally had a temporary survival world, Then temporary worlds to play the survival games maps we made. We even hosted our own ftb servers a few times for members to play on. The plugins they had were, groupmanager, worldedit, worldguard, voxelsniper, dynmap, essentials, disguisecraft, worldborder, hawkeye AND coreprotect we even had a custom version of voxelsniper at one point
Who paid the rent? And how many slots did it have?
The NGFYM server was hosted by some fans of the youtube channel that were renting a dedicated server.
During the start of TeamVareide server we were sponsored by the cubedhost company, it was free as long as the videos vareide made had something similar this in the videos description “this server was hosted on a cubedhost dedicated server” “coupon code for your own server”
After awhile TheHive came into the picture and teamvareide was run on that for a month or 2 until they needed the room and then vareide went and bought a dedicated server from ovh.
For the most part the slots were unlimited. 1337 was a number we usually set it to
Did all players have a similar rank? Or was it based on experience, or even pay-to-win?
The ngfym server all had same rank then mods/admins
For the most part team vareide had similar ranks, people would apply on our forums to join the server as long as they had legit pictures of their own work, Then they would get trial rank and build a trial build on the server by hand. If it impressed us enough, they would become a full member with worldedit and voxelsniper.
Was there an active community, with forums or voice servers?
Yes. It was a very large community with people all over the world. We had teamspeak, forums, twitter account, Facebook, steam community…
What did you experience as a leader of a community? Stories from your server!
I experienced many different things, Slamacow was a mod on our server in the very early days, I hung out with him alot. Was in a casual google hangout with some yogscast staff once, Played survival games with some random big named youtubers. Along with trolling vareide…
Experienced slow times… very busy times, timelapses… community hatred (hive vs mcsg) And towards the end I experienced backstabbing towards me.
Screenshots!
The post is way to long for me, just look up survival games 1-7 in pmc and you can see stuff we all worked on.
Why did it shut down? And when?
The NGFYM server shut down because the bulk of the staff wasn’t around to support it anymore.
For Teamvareide, They shut down around 2 months after they fired me, From what i heard the staff wasn’t willing to keep the community going anymore along with Dennis(Vareide) not being around to support the server. They officially closed Jan 11th 2014 https://imageshack.com/i/0vp0bsj
Do you plan to host a server again?
Maybe … I miss the 15 hour days i put into servers, I got myself addicted to helping… and trolling people.(oh and stalking them while invisible ) … to the point where i dont build much anymore
What’s your Minecraft Multiplayer history? Why did you host your own server, and when? Start date/MC Version?
I owned a server called PrimeMC back in 2012-2014. I originally created it so that my friends from school and I could have a fun time. I thought there were less limitations hosting your own server rather than someone else. ( Normally a shared host ). We started the server on 1.4.2 and held it until 1.8, where with the recent circumstances I decided to stop it.
The story behind the server’s name?
The story behind the name of PrimeMC is that I was talking one of my friends online trying to figure out a name. We ended up spending hours, I cant really remember. Anyways, we settled on PrimeMC.
Gamemode? Plugins? Mods? Maybe your own special plugins?
It started off as just a survival server because it started when there wasn’t really much on bukkit. Later as I progressed I turned it into a hub server. It had around 6 servers running on one dedicated host.
How did you advertise it?
I advertised as many other people said from voting sites. I also became pretty well known in the Minecraft community and had a ( lot ) of people on skype. They enjoyed the server so they invited their friends and it grew and grew.
Who paid the rent? And how many slots did it have?
I paid the rent with the amount of donations the server received. It was quite a lot actually around 250$ give or take. There was 500 slots but it most likely could have hold much more.
Did all players have a similar rank? Or was it based on experience, or even pay-to-win?
When I think about a “play-to-win” it is not really fair to all players, so I made sure that the donation ranks balanced out the normal players. Surprisingly, the greatest amount of donations I got was from the players who were just there to play and have fun. Not the intense PvP-Type of players.
Was there an active community, with forums or voice servers?
I owned a pretty active community ranging from about 60-100 average players. We owned a forum where our players could come and be apart of the community with giveaways, dropparty’s, etc.
What did you experience as a leader of a community? Stories from your server!
Ummm. I think the most valued point from my view was being able to come on something away from normal life where everyone is willing to help out with each other and the possibilities were endless.
Screenshots!
Why did it shut down? And when?
I shut it down because I felt that there was no place for it to further grow, and I could not keep up with the expectations the players had. Another reason was for the new the EULA/Bukkit issues. It was becoming hard since you really didn’t know if it was illegal or not to charge for donations, so I just stopped players from buying donation ranks. Eventually I had no longer the funds to keep it running and stopped. I went into focusing more on new projects like one I am currently working on.
Do you plan to host a server again?
I do not plan to host another server I am just interested in if the community will still thrive under all the conditions opposed.
- Steve
That’s really sad. No clue why they did it? Were you too young? Or did you ban someone for no reason?
I sometimes temporarily demoted staff members because they did really silly stuff, but not forever…
Same here. But when Sponge is out, I will restart with fresh plugins, and a fresh server (max 50 slots), together with nice, professional people (like you ;)).
Awesome. Nice Post!
I was 27 at the time, so no, age wasn’t the issue, keep in mind our server was the worlds largest creative server at one point. I was the co-founder of the server for 1 year and 7 months. The other owner had a difference of opinion, i believed in the community and doing things just for them while at the same time keeping our server more distanced from the hive. His opinion was the server needs to build maps for the hive and anything people made could be used on the hive weather they wanted it to or not. Eventually our server had a few hundred maps loaded (builds copy/pasted to a map) the hive staff came in made a few maps, then i would be expected to sort them out at a later time without knowing what they were for.
Anyway the reason they gave for demoting me was they wanted to change the current system, and to do that i could no longer be staff. “there is no longer a place for you here within the staff team” is the official reason… went from owner rank in the server, to a normal member … after they got rid of me, the only major changes i noticed was a new plot-me trial world that looked worse then our old one, they removed all the extra maps without knowing what they were for, some of them were maps people spent over a year on… Also when they closed the server I wasn’t allowed to help people get their builds. Bad bitter memories…
Thanks. What was the name of the server you owned/hosted?
‘Mature players’ is what I expect also. Another good rule that all the regular trusted players like is ‘No warnings, no 2nd chance and no appeals’. Griefers, thieves the rude and foul mouthed etc only mess up once. I’m not interested in keeping as many players as possible, its a nicer environment with fewer but polite and helpful players. Its what keeps the regular long term players coming back, they don’t have to put up with the childish behaviour. Its not a PvP server which doesnt appeal to those types anyway.
Things can always go wrong. There should be a way to submit a ban appeal or to apologize.
@Steve It’s “The Colony”, and I’m still hosting it
I’m still hosting it As advertising is not allowed I cant say publicly of course.
Griefing, stealing, claiming not to know the rules and language is not an accident. There is an appeal section in the forum, but its more for the entertainment value of the players to see some of the pathetic excuses some use. One of the most common excuse is ‘my little brother was using my computer’, I can only assume there a LOT of untrustworthy little brothers out there, so take note potential thieves and griefers, you need to come up with something much better than that.
A great point! I also limit teleportation using my Population Density plugin. The rule is that you can’t just teleport yourself out of trouble - you have to find a teleportation post (they’re automatically placed on the surface in a grid layout) to teleport to a friend or back home. This seems to chase off the kids, because they’re used to the game being made easier by common commands like /tpa and /home.
I dont like /tpa and dont have it enabled. /home is a 5 second delay. The only way to port around is with the Tardis plugin (http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/tardis/) they have build and operate, even then its only once they get into the higher builder groups they can port to other players. Travel is not instant in the Tardis and they have to keep supplying it with energy.
Some kids think they are excused from ‘mature behaviour’ because of their age, they thought wrong. My registration process forces them to agree to the rules that have been set before they become a builder, so I have no problem banning anyone who does the wrong thing, even a couple of VIP’s (donators) have been banned. The regular players appreciate it and know they don’t have to put up with the annoying behaviour that exists on many servers.
MC-Beast. Was a DW20 server back in the 1.4.7 era. Small server for a small crowd. I created it because I was not impressed with the servers that were available. I had my own ideas on how game play should be for everyone. It was a typical survival server with a few convenient twists such as an economy kits, jobs, along with some fun side projects like mini-games. Everyone played legit, including the staff and myself, no exceptions. People liked that. It went further than I expected but was short lived (about six months) due to lack of funds. I lost interest after a while when I couldn’t keep up with the expectation of the players. They always wanted more, on top of the griefing and whining and crying. It started out with a very friendly community of people. Ranks were given through donations and were cheaper than the competition so players had no problem throwing down a couple bucks to keep us going. It was a lot of work keeping it running due to the mix of mods and plugins with MCPC(Cauldron). Keeping the server up became a full time job. Between the bugs and the constant griefing problems players slowly lost interest and moved on. No more donations were trickling in so once 1.5.2 packs started rolling out the last month was paid out of pocket and I let it die from there. I slowly got into writing bukkit plugins and dabbling with forge as a replacement hobby. I may try again someday. Was fun while it lasted.
Just saw this post, I might do this on my network I’m starting! PM Me for details.
