I think notch is totally against Microsoft its working policy. He will not sell the company to Microsoft, I hope…
It is not completely up to Notch. He is not in charge of Mojang from what I know.
Notch is Chairman of Mojang’s board if I’m not wrong, he probably has the final say regarding the matter. The rumors aren’t about selling just Minecraft, it’s about selling the entire company.
Personally Sponge should go forward as planned. If Microsoft does purchase Mojang the Sponge team can evaluate that new information and make course adjustments as required. Until then it’s storming in a tea cup.
I don’t think we should be worrying about the consequences IF Microsoft would take over. First of all, removing Linux support wouldn’t be something they can easily do. Minecraft and it’s server is coded in Java which runs on a lot of platforms including Linux. Second of all, the last thing they’re waiting for is creating an uproar and drama for charging to host servers.
Notch controls 71% of Mojang through Notch Development (which wholly-owns Mojang). He likely stands to get quite a bit more than a billion $$$. Not to mention that he’s already been getting 70+ million per year to licence Minecraft to Mojang.
Basically 3 people own Mojang and Minecraft. The rest are probably only employees and even though they may have some kind of vested interest agreements in the case of a sale, it’s unlikely they will take any major share of the sum.
Iam playing on a mac… ._. Microsoft will make bad updates for mac users…
I’ve read in financial news reports that it’s likely, most of all, that Microsoft will focus on its Xbox and phone versions, and updates will be lesser for other platforms. Now the sale has occurred, we know that they (according to press releases) intend to keep allowing all platforms, which is a bit of relief for now (I’m on Mac, so I was very worried). Those other platforms are likely to be made ‘superior’ to PC ones, to get people to move away from the latter. But I’m more worried about the modding community.
What I perceive there is based on logical analysis of business and motive: It would not benefit Microsoft to suddenly shut down modding immediately; not yet. The recent furor over Bukkit has caused enough trouble, I would suspect. They would not like more negativity just yet; they are trying to keep the Minecraft community reassured and online.
They are more likely to want to shut down privately hosted servers to benefit Realms, which is a nice cash cow. They get nothing from allowing outside servers. So the server jars could be taken from us or controlled more at least; ie, you can only set up a server through Realms.
I do expect a slow demise to independent modding. And a slow demise would also benefit Microsoft in that the mods are still attracting a larger player base; why fix it just yet? They will get round to determining how to make money from addons and will no doubt use ideas they’ve seen from existing mods.
That’s going to be up to you to figure out a response to.
What I would do, is be prepared for this, keep watch for signs of it. They won’t do this suddenly; there will be signs, that’s all. The EULA squeeze was a sign of what was coming, too.
And your response should be to create a brand new game based on your brilliant ideas. And to use the vast audience you already have to get it going.
I believe one of the reasons why Microsoft wants Minecraft is because they know its something everyone enjoys. They probably have plans to ship this game with their future consoles the same way they did with the arcade xbox’s.
Or
They are going to give Minecraft for free as part of their games for gold program. This program requires Microsoft to buyout the title from the company who owns the title in order to redistribute the game for free as part of their games for gold program. If this is the case, they don’t want to develop Minecraft at all, they just want it to redistribute it.
Sigh. Yucky thought. But yea, anything could happen. I feel like I’m holding my breath.
Well if it is the case that Microsoft just wants to distribute Minecraft, Minecraft will die on the PC platform.
The deal is already made an finished.
No, the deal isn’t finished. It closes sometime in the latter part of 2014. It is possible that it could fall through, but I highly doubt that.
Nope, he held 70% of Mojang so he was able to decide it alone.
Mojang was bought by Microsoft, and the deal is still going through. It was posted on the Mojang website, stating it was bought for 2.5 Billion.
