You can also get more money for digital ocean from the github for students program ($100 for free)

No you don’t. Servers at the host I work at start at 1GB of ram and run very large modpacks with 20 TPS for a few players. Ram is … storage space close to the CPU. You need more ram when you have a poorly performing CPU to cache more data between operations. Minecraft being a single threaded application needs a high performance single threaded CPU to stand up to the task. Think Intel Xeon 1650 v2’s, Intel Xeon 1240 v3’s, and others like that. Other things that speed up in game speed is using SSD’s and having a fast bus on your mobo (having a solid enterprise mobo in general). This whole thread is filled with misinformation.

me included? :crying_cat_face:

Sounds like some hosting company :worried:. Tell me are you really paying 6$/month for 1gb ? Off course this requires to have some knowledge about linux.

Well I agree with you that in some cases 1gb is enough to get the server running. But when players start to join and you go over 5 or so it will start lagging. On my tekkit lite servers a empty server eats about 700mb of ram. For every player that join you need to add +100mb and if the world hasn’t regen that can rapidly increase when its generating the world. When I still did servers on hosting, I usually generated my map completely before I opened it it to the public.

I’d have to agree with @thomas15v Yes a vanilla server can run just fine with 1GB, however modpacks increase that need. I’ve seen modpack servers require 1.5GB just to sit empty. Thing you have to keep in mind is a lot of the mods are not coded as efficiently as they could be (no offense to anyone). I lot of the time you end up dealing pretty severe memory leaks. Yes having a high performance single thread cpu will minimize performance issues drastically, it will not completely solve your problem. Considering the $6/m sticker price, there’s a pretty good chance that high performance processor is being shared quite heavily among other customers.

Again, thank you for all your replies and help.

I turned the server back to Forge and I am using my own Custom Modpack, which is cute, lite and very fun. I was very sad about this yesterday cause it was very frustrating, maybe it still is, but I need to remember that we can’t always get anything we want. At the end, only 2-3 of my friends and I are coming to play, so it will be fine.

Thanks again for your interest~~

Just saying, OVH has the cheapest VPS I’ve seen. You can setup a small Minecraft server for 2.99$/m.

Yeah, but I have had bad experiences with thier VPS (Mostly never getting servers I pay for and crappy performance)

I switched to TWG about 3 months ago and so far, they have unbelievable prices and solid support. Try them out, for $2.49/month, you can get 1GB, or for $5/month, you can get 2GB. In your situation, it seems like a worthy host.

Oh yes, super duper true, for shared hosting TWG is the best solution.

Sounds awesome but I already have the next months paid in my server hosting. Thanks tho~

I believe I have the answer to your problem. triangle.gs ! Paste that into your URL bar. They offer 0.5GB FREE OF CHARGE! Lots of great support. When you set up your server, the wait is ridiculous, but if you follow their social media you get a free server instantly! The servers run pretty great, and let you access FTP and stuff. You can choose custom builds of forge and cauldron and all that stuff too. Great thing is, its free, so your server ca

I see absolutely no mention of how their model is self sustaining. That would make me nervous enough to stay away.

I’m digging through it in a VM right now… Will update with findings, if any.

Update: Found the self sustaining part. Only the 0.5 GB RAM server is free. 1 GB is $5.00 a month, and each additional GB is another $5.00 a month.

Another Update: The only server location is in Arizona… So that’s good for pings.

More things: I hit ā€œsubscribe on Youtubeā€ to accelerate the server setup (because it says an estimated 1400+ hours for setup) and now Google is saying ā€œTriangle would like to:ā€

  • Know who you are on Google
  • View your email address
  • View your basic profile info
  • Manage your Youtube account

Of course I made a fake Gmail and I’m in a VM, so why not? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yet another thing: It makes you do this for Twitter, Youtube, AND Twitch. On Twitter, its going to be able to:

  • Read tweets from your timeline
  • See who you follow, and follow new people
  • Update your profile
  • Post tweets for you

K den. Onwards!

Last Update I Promise: After creating the three fake accounts and giving Triangle access to them (basically that’s what it did), nothing happens! It just redirects to a blank page. So yeah, I am sufficiently sketched out.

Hmm… I don’t know then. I had no problem with my fake accounts. Back in the day it was ridiculously cheap. 10GB used to be like $5, but now that its so popular prices are going up. The poing is, if you want a free server that lets you have full access to the files, its a good place to be. Also, your browser could be the problem. I used google chrome.

I am a long time user of triangle, and I am not trying to promote something that is a scam.

Update: Appears they have some problems with their login servers or something. I can’t even log in t access my own server and dashboard right now.

Also, what do you mean by ā€œIn a VMā€

I don’t know but I think you just need to legit get on a normal win 7 PC and test it with chrome. Not working on my iPad. Idk. It has worked countless times in the past when I needed servers hosted.

Um, thanks again, but I would like this post to be closed, cause I don’t want people to go advertising hosting sites cause of me, specially when all the hosting sites are more expensive than the one I am using, and when I said I already have the last months paid.

Thank you~~

@cybersurvivor
VM = Virtual Machine. Was using Windows 10 tech preview. Whenever something seems sketchy to me, I check it out in a VM before I even think about doing it on my actual system. Also, was using Chrome.

No real need to do it in a VM actually. Its completely online with no downloads that I know of. Idk what they are turning into but back in the day they were so great.
