Pay to Play Minecraft Server

If someone created a pay to play Minecraft server, would anyone join it?
The server fee would have to be pretty small, or it could decrease based on the amount of paying players.
I don’t run a server, I wouldn’t ever want to, but do you see any problems with funding a server in this way?
Another idea is a subscription, do you see any problems with that?

If someone made a pay to play server, it might not get very far off the ground. However the EULA has no issues with this type of setup so I don’t see an issue with it. Of course, it’s really dependent on how the server is designed that will have the greatest effect. So if someone really wanted to do this, they would need a rather good idea to grab peoples attention.

wait what? I thought the EULA did have a problem with this sort of stuff?

Pay to Play is perfectly ok, you must be mistaking it with Pay to Win.

ah right yeh, thanks. This actually kinda sounds like a cool idea

From what I remember from when that whole “grr we hate donations” thing that mojang did, they have no problem with charging people to play on a server, as long as every single player is charged the same amount.

Didn’t there used to be a fairly well known server that cost ten dollars to join? Pretty sure it did well enough.

FyreUK? Thay did well a while back, but I haven’t been following them lately. They had some really cool builds, though

Selling items =/= donations

Donation Apreciation =/= Selling in-game items

Mojang never disallowed donations.

“You are allowed to accept donations from players. You can thank them
publicly or in-game, but can’t give preferential treatment for donating.
You are not allowed to restrict gameplay features in an attempt to make
money.”

To clarify, Mojang doesn’t hate donations. They don’t like giving items, ranks, or access to mods based on donations. Unless those items don’t actually affect gameplay (such as hats). However since most servers that run on donations tend to provide these things as a reward for donations, it ends up being the same thing for many of them.

I would if it’s worth but if it’s pay to play and pay to win combined, that will be a greedy marketing decision and I know servers that have done that exactly.

(monthly)subscriptions are bad, but i dont see problem with paying once to get access.
the server would have to provide very unique gameplay. majority of servers are generic factions-mcmmo/kit pvp clones (i found it boring, no matter what server you join, the gameplay is always same) or smaller (and often very bad) copies of another popular minigames networks (Why should i play [insert minigame name here] on your server and had to pay for it, when i can join [insert server network here], where the minigame was released as first.

OK I have been a mod and dev on a few servers, while none of them have been pay to access servers there was a “plan” passed around to have a second unrestricted server to player’s that meet a a minimum play time critera on the f2p server. The play time limit access was to prevent greefers. A pay for access server could be viable with enuff support of the player base. But as a stand alone I agree that it’s not a viable option.

Note: the server went under do to pour management after “ownership” changing hands a few times.
