Is there a particular reason why this needs to be private?
I only ask because if i remember correctly from IRC, you’re paying for this.

If I’m paying it for it, why would it not be private?

No, they’re both questions. I ask because selling mods or plugins is against Mojang’s EULA, and advertising for it is not allowed on the Sponge forums.

Sponge is sponsored, but there’s an enormous difference between requesting donations and requiring payment (i.e. one is optional). And commission is still paying for a project, as opposed to a donation.

From what I understand being payed/commissioned to make a mod/plugin is not against the EULA, as long as the author does not sell it to other people. He is hiring him, kind of how like large mini-game servers are EULA compliant but they hire many developers to develop in-house plugins.

I have also heard the argument that plugins(for Spigot, Sponge, Canary, etc) are able to be sold as they are modifications to the server platform using that platform’s API and not actually to Minecraft, but I don’t really agree with that argument and seems to be walking too close to the line.

From the Minecraft EULA:

If you’ve bought the Game, you may play around with it and modify it by adding modifications, tools, or plugins, which we will refer to collectively as “Mods.” By “Mods,” we mean something original that you or someone else created that doesn’t contain a substantial part of our copyrightable code or content.

Any Mods you create for the Game from scratch belong to you (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don’t sell them for money / try to make money from them and so long as you don’t distribute Modded Versions of the Game.

Spigot is 100% not allowed to do what they are doing.

I’m not really going to bother going into specifics. But I can tell you this:

If asking for developers to make you a plugin and paying them for their work is against Sponge forums rules, I suggest you make a PSA on your irc SpongeDev channel considering multiple big name developers referred me here after I asked there.

Second, we should probably let the Spigot guys know that the thousands of plugins (resources) being sold on their webshop/forums is breaking the EULA! I’m sure they know though since you stated it’s not allowed above.

Anyways, I’m going to delete the post since I don’t want to start any unnecessary problems.

I agree that the practice of selling plugins like that is not okay, and actually sort of ruined the great community aspect of Bukkit, but it is in a grey area. As the code you write in a Sponge plugin if you don’t use NMS really doesn’t need Minecraft, it’s completely seperate and could even run in a different game if Sponge was implemented there.

In this case I believe “you” is the company or party paying the user. Sort of how the code you create working for a company in the office, is actually theirs and not yours. I am fairly sure some of those large mini-game servers communicate directly with Mojang about EULA compliance and they do hire and pay developers.

@zachincool Whether or not it is allowed to commission someone to make a plugin for you, someone might possibly make it for free. Message me the idea and if it is simple enough I may make it for you for free if I have the time. Maybe someone else would do the same.
