The idea is quite simple:
- You listen to incomming messages.
- If the parser detects an emote in
it’s short form, like <3, or it’s long form, like [heart], it
changes it to it’s more complex form as

- If a mod is installed on
the client side, it changes it to an emoji
.

The 3rd point sounds like a good idea. 
For the second, though, doesn’t Minecraft already do that? I know they convert simple ‘:)’ smilies to
anyways.
I’m not sure what you are talking about, I just tried on vanilla 1.8.3 and ‘:)’ stays ‘:)’
I swear I’ve seen it. xD Maybe it was a plugin that did what this is talking about. :3
