How do I support 1.8 and 1.9 clients while using 1.12 Sponge Vanilla?
Erm… Not possible. 1.12 server will only connect 1.12 clients and maybe higher.
My question is why do you want to do that? Whats are you trying to do?
I wanted to use the latest Sponge version while still offering compatibility to older clients.
Generally, people start from an old version and go newer. (ViaVersion does this.) Going newer to Older is much more complex.
Yeah no. Because 1.12 has new textures, blocks and new entities it is pretty much impossible for s older client to connect to it. It is the same reason why forge mods that add new blocks, entities, particals, etc stop regular clients from connecting.
With the current round of launcher there is practically no point. It used to be that you had to upgrade minecraft manually or you had to wait for the servers to update.
Servers have been updating pretty fast, the only downside is that Sponge for 1.12 is using API 7 which has undergone breaking changes.
Now with the current launcher it’s too easy to swap between versions, so why wouldn’t you just run the version of minecraft stuff is made for?
