Did the sponge project inspire the forge developers to start staying updated with MC updates that are compatible with the original update? Or is my info wrong? Example: Forge 1.8 Forge 1.8.9 is it that these are not compatible and if they are then why can’t I run 1.8 mods on 1.8.9? Did sponge get them to start doing this? If so then I like it except the part that 1.8 mods are not compatible with 1.8.9 mods. Things like that. Thanks!

No, this is basically how forge works.
They just decided to do it or did 1.8.9 just wasn’t ccompatable with 1.8?
Forge updates to new MC versions always break mods. This is because Forge / FML mods always have to be compiled against the minecraft.jar, which is not the case for Sponge plugins.
