Ah, that theme. I’ll give it a check and post a screen shot XD
It doesn’t look like they have the basic themes anymore short of the high contrast ones O.o
The start menu using High Contrast #1 XD

Guess I’ll be sticking to LUbuntu, I wouldn’t even have a win 7 partition except League of Legends has no Linux version. >:(
even in the basic theme the start menu is not reverted by format, just colour!
Windows X would have been cooler
As the tech release isn’t really called 10 yet, maybe they skipped to 10 so they could do that, and just haven’t implemented their designs yet XD I’d like to see that. The initial fish on 8 preview was pretty weak.
Windows 9 is being skipped because of lazy third party programmers. During internal testing it was basically discovered that a lot of people were using a lazy version check of if (version.StartsWith == “Windows 9”) to check for Windows 95/98
This lead to them deciding instead of breaking everyones shit that they would just call this one Windows 10, what with it being the most likely last major release in their current release system.
So I don’t feel like typing a whole lot right now since I’m really tired, but I’ll just post my TL;DR version of it.
Basically, it’s Windows 8.1 mixed with Windows 7. That’s pretty much it. There are some Windows 7 goodies that were mentioned in this thread that have been removed, such as the classic theme and other things, but there are a couple neat additions.
For one, I like the multiple desktops. Now, obviously they took the idea from Linux distros as they’ve had them for years. The concept is solid, however it does need work. First of all, I don’t think there’s any sort of keyboard macro to switch between desktops (correct me if I’m wrong), making it rather annoying to have to click on the icon if I ever want to change desktops.
Second, the snapping of windows. I’m not a huge fan of this as of yet,but I feel as if it’ll grow on me. Basically, whenever you bring a window to the side of the screen, it’ll take up that portion of the screen. The difference with Windows 10, however, is that it’ll show you what you can fill up the other portion of the screen with.
(Ignore the wallpaper, it’s an album art.)
One thing I absolutely love is that the command prompt is resizable both vertically and horizonally. Of course, you’ve always had the option of making the command prompt wider in the settings, but you couldn’t resize it like you could most other windows. I’m not exactly going to jump on the hype train and say things about the ability to paste and such in it…you’ve always been able to do that with the right click menu.
EDIT:
Never mind about TL;DR versions.
Where did you get that from?
According to windows, it’s because they have taken a bigger leap and will not follow on from 8.
I don’t have a link to any “official” article from any Microsoft employees, but this is what was quoted over and over again.
http://www.osnews.com/story/27969/Why_did_Microsoft_skip_Windows_9_
if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {
This is a lot more believable than wanting to skip Windows 9 because they didn’t want to follow from it. Besides, it’s practically Windows 8 anyways with some changed features.
You can get the tech preview there. It’ll let you download it as an update (which seems to work even from win7, although I didn’t go all the way through with that), and the .ISO for fresh installs (which I did).
98 was better than 95.
(I know, not what you meant.)
I honestly see no major bugs with the tech preview so far. As they said, it needs polishing and work here or there, but other than that, there haven’t been any hindering bugs I’ve come across so far.
This is going a little out there, but this is fine to be a daily driver for pretty much anyone.
@simon816 @Stefenatefun I will just leave this here for you: startswith("windows 9") | searchcode
So many lazy programmers…
Aside from lazy programmers, though, there really isn’t much to say about Windows 10 other than what I already said. It’s really just Windows 8.1 with some changes.
I’d think so as well (about the bugs). There’s only things that minorly irritate me so far, like not being able to hide/remove the search and app view buttons next to the start bar and not being able to drag windows to the corners between two monitors to put them in the corner. Even more minor annoyance how the resize area of a window exists a bit outside the visable area of the window.
There was an instance where I had skype on one half of a screen, and when pushing N++ to the other half, it suggested apps for the half skype occupied, despite it being occupied. Maybe particular to Skype though since it tries to cling to screen edges and in effect doesn’t size appropriately in win10.
Been a few minor issues with aero peek, but it’s not a big deal to me right now and will likely get fixed before it’s full release. Only feature I’d want is to remove live tiles from the start menu entirely. May be able to remove each one individually, but haven’t tried yet. Indeed you can, and I have done just that. Would be nicer if they had a remove-all option instead.
Yeah, I didn’t like it at all that they still had the tiles in the start menu. I understand why, but I personally hate them.
I must say, though, it does look rather tiny without the tiles there.
That previous screenshot was on a 1080p monitor and this screenshot is on a 768p monitor so this isn’t an entirely accurate representation, but here’s the start menu on 7.
I think that it looks a bit more like the XP start menu(Not seeing what the all apps screen looks like.) than it does the windows 7 menu.
Now that I think about it, yeah, it does. XP and before had very simple start menus.
Source on that? I installed it into a Hyper-V VM the moment it was released, only took maybe 8GB total if it was lucky, though i’ve since installed a couple of things on it that have bumped that up to about 10GB.
Well, I based it on the fact that I set aside a 128GB partition, and it was about 100GB free after it was setup somewhat minimally. I don’t think I put much else on it at the time I said that.
