Plodules.
My final compromise.
Plodules.
My final compromise.
Stick to your guns, @ColonelHedgehog. Modules.
How about plugins? Everyone already knows what they are and they fit the description of what they are. You asked the question, what should we call Sponge plugins? My answer is just that! Plugins because that is what they are!
I like having the simple “plugin”, but I reckon a fancy name should be “Corks”
And call donators Spongesors!
Does it really matter?
Lets just call it plugins, like it used to be. We don’t have to come up with anything fancy or whatnot, lets keep it general and basic. I think splugins is a cool nickname, however.
Mod on servers and forums is short for Moderator…
So? Doesn’t that just prove my point?
Maybe. They both improve something.
Agreed, just keep it like Bukkit
Here are the possible names that I think we should use for these Sponge “Mods”:
Agreed.
Keep what is familiar… and don’t make it sound so “campy”… some people will not take it serious.
Spongelet?
like sproglet (child)
It hangs off its parent (Sponge)
Plugin, addon and extension are nice too.
Well I am indeed an old school kind of guy when it comes to this.
I have been dealing with bukkit for two years so I would like plugins to be the name for sponge mods.
Spongemen. I rest my case. On this table. This beautiful redwood table. Huh, what… who put a fake table here?!?
[rant]
(Insert skype head-banging-against-wall emoticon here) Does it really have to be this complicated?
This might be a new project and a step away from the mistakes that bukkit made when it was first developed but do we really have to go as far as changing the name of everything?
You do realize this is only a small portion of the developer community and an even smaller portion of the server community. Do you really expect pretty much the entire developer / server owner community to adopt a new name for these things. They do the exact same thing, they are simply on a different platform, externally players won’t even be able to tell a difference between plugins and “splugins” just to name one example of the many names haphazardly thrown into this thread.
Keep it the same, just because we are changing the API does not mean we have to change every gritty little detail of the whole system. In fact lets try to keep a few things the same so that when this does go public people are not quite so overwhelmed.
If it isn’t broken, stop trying to fix it!

I disagree with your rant.
Nobody said we’re changing the name of “everything.” We want to consider the most sensical names for the mods. If you want them to be called plugins, say so. If you have a problem with this discussion, simply do not participate.
Most of the names here are just supposed to be funny. You are correct in saying that Sponge is smaller than Spigot or Bukkit. However, that should be a signal to you that maybe it would be appropriate to stand out and be original. Additionally, if you find it difficult to say “module” where you might say “plugin”… That’s not a problem with the name, and debatably, it is a problem with you.
Again, you’re pretending that we want to rehaul the entire system… We aren’t saying “make events be called occurrences!” or “make commands be called directives!”
And finally, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a poor analogy to use when speaking of Sponge. Spigot is progressing, albeit slowly. We made Sponge because we wanted an intelligent, non-proprietary alternative.
Dem Splugins tho
i think plugins or modules are the way to go
Late to the discussion I know but I was looking at different words that could be used. I’m comfortable with plugins and mods but if this is a reboot of how thing are done and a new identity for modded Minecraft then I like “Mutations”. To me the idea it conveys should cover both types of code and give a good monster sound to it, although “muts” isn’t that good.
